Record-breaking Rebellion take Shanghai pole

Rebellion Racing became the first privateer team in FIA WEC history to take pole position after comfortably setting the fastest time in qualifying at Shanghai.

The impact of the WEC’s new success handicap regulations was clear to see during Friday’s free practice, with Ginetta leading the timesheets and the gap between the works Toyotas and the privateer cars very small indeed.

However, come qualifying Rebellion had the pace to post the fastest average lap time of 1:45.892 and take their first ever pole position in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The Ginettas were some two seconds slower on average pace in qualifying, with the factory Toyotas in fourth and fifth.

The #42 Cool Racing crew continued their excellent form this weekend, matching the fast times in free practice and qualifying on pole position in LMP2. Also starting from the front row will be the #37 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca, with the #22 United Autosports machine in third.

Porsche strong in GTE Pro

Porsche took the pole positions in both GTE Pro and GTE Am. In GTE Pro, just 17 thousands of a second separated the #92 Porsche from the #95 Aston Martin in second. The GTE Am pole went to the #56 Project 1 car, which was around one second faster than the #98 Aston Martin in second position.
