The 4h Shanghai kicked off with a surprise during free practice. Toyota were unable to match the privateer LMP1 cars as Ginetta secured P1.
Rebellion Racing managed to record the fastest times in FP1, ahead of the pair of Ginettas. In the second session the #6 Ginetta found some additional pace and set the quickest lap. Overall the LMP1 field appears to be much closer together.
With the new success handicap system now taking full effect, the WEC appears to have succeeded in lowering the gap between the works LMP1 hybrids and the privateer-run machines. Here is an overview of the lap times from FP1 and FP2:
