The new car will be called the BR01 as it is built by BR Engineering. It is designed by Paolo Catone, the same man that designed the Le Mans winning Peugeot 908 LMP1 car. The car is being tested, as a full scale model, in the wind tunnel at the moment and is set to run for the first time in testing in December.

Although SMP’s programme is yet to be completely confirmed the team principal, Boris Rotenberg has stated that “We are optimistic about the potential of the BR01”. It is also the case that they are aiming to have two of the BR01 cars on the WEC grid next year.

Rotenberg went on to say that “Early on as a team, we wanted to produce our own car”. He added that “The car is designed to appeal to gentlemen drivers, consider that LMP2 is the playground of the gentlemen, who must feel comfortable in the cockpit.”

Although a driver line up is yet to be confirmed, 3 drivers have been named that will be involved in the development of the BR01. Current SMP drivers Nicolas Minassian and Maurizio Mediani will be joined in the development process by ex-Formula One driver, Mika Salo.
